I grew up loving Halloween. In our family, we carved pumpkins, dressed up in costumes, and went trick-or-treating. Anything festive where you can decorate and see shop windows filled with seasonal displays fills me with joy!
During fall, it feels like an excuse to get cozy under a blanket, watch a scary movie, and eat Halloween-themed food (usually pumpkin spiced).
I have never personally been a fan of horror movies as a genre, but there is a great selection of not-too-scary, funny, or more thriller-type movies that I prefer. I’ve listed my top choices here, so get the candy out, hang up some festive fairy lights, and enjoy! 🍁🎃🎃🍂

In this funny gothic horror film directed by Tim Burton, you are immersed in a world of crazy brilliance! The sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice came out this year and is just as quirky and fun as the first. Buckle your seatbelts, you're in for a ride!
2. Corpse bride

Another Tim Burton classic is Corpse Bride. In this animated musical fantasy film, you follow a young man accidentally bringing a deceased woman to life and the fun journey that ensues!
3. Get out

I highly recommend this movie. Very well filmed, excellent acting, and had me on the edge of my seat throughout. It’s the perfect combination of creepy and comedy with elements of horror.
4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

To me, Harry Potter is the ultimate cozy festive movie. I specifically picked The Prisoner of Azkaban because it has the most autumnal tone as well as Halloween themes throughout. But you could pick any of the movies from the series!

This movie is very heartwarming and sweet, with romance and humor woven in. It has gothic overtones and is usually a Halloween or Christmas classic.
6. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

"I see you shiver... with anticipation!!" Fantastic cult movie that I've watched annually since I first saw it on a huge screen on the beach. This one is also fun to watch in the cinema/theatre to participate or watch all the 'shadow cast' who perform the scenes during the movie while dressing up in fishnet stockings and wigs. Have fun! It's a horror/musical/comedy parody movie.
7. Psycho

Hitchcock directs a brilliant and suspenseful thriller movie that has an iconic shower scene. It is beautifully shot, and the acting is superb.

Two women fall in love with the same man in Death Becomes Her. They end up drinking a potion to stay young, which has very interesting consequences! A great dark comedy that has stayed with me since I first watched it.
9. The shining

Jack Nicholson's performance in The Shining is truly memorable. He takes Stephen King's novel and brings it to life in a truly epic horror movie.
10. A Quiet Place

I love this movie. It’s so beautifully shot, has wonderful performances by everyone, especially Emily Blunt, and has you holding your breath in most scenes. John Krasinski as a director is very clever and creates a great thriller horror movie where the premise is if you make noise, you get killed.
Let me know in the comments below if you watch any 👻
Happy Halloween! 🎃
